Week 8 Mashups

Just when I thought I would finish on time life interferes.

I've never been to Codex Map - no surprise there. I have actually been looking for a similar site to correspond to movies and locations but then they don't ISBN numbers. I've already put the site on my del.ici.ous page for future use - particularly on a faster machine! My home computer just was taking too long to paint the screens.

HEALTHweb mentioned in Chu's article was fascinating. I know just the staff who would like an introduction to the site. I read a report this weekend about high numbers of deaths among children in China due to foot and mouth disease. The China alerts were thus very interesting to read. Again I will try the page when I'm in the office because it is just too slow at home. This slow computer really kills the thrill of discovery! But I really must consider the about the types of information being blended. We have gotten so use to the immediate computer respond we are unwilling to be patient long enough to find out what a site can offer. What does this mean for our patrons?

HubMed sounds intriguing but will require a visit with a faster computer. For now just the article is a bit overwhelming as I try and keep in mind the different access points to full text and tagged searching. Will need to see it in action - perhaps on the University's campus as they have more sfx links and access to Scopus.

I tried out Frekfly and found I really have to dig for the information promised on its home page. So, as with a number of home pages, they aren't are intuitive as I might need them to be. The site was listed as one of the best mashups or as a past award winner.

I think I understand what I got when I entered "privacy" with the "librarianblogs" searchroll. I was expecting blog entries or links. Although I'm not sure I didn't. I'm beginning to lose track between the forest and the trees at this point. What I did find was a thread regarding identity theft. The "big brother" issue will always be with us I suspect which is no doubt why I had to keep a log of all my passwords and account names with each new assignment! I'm not too sure of the advantages of using Rollyo but will have to start an account and do some more looking - another alias!

Finished - thanks for all the time spend creating and monitoring the "course". I've learned a lot!

Week 7 Podcasting and YouTube

This is way too fun! Sorry but after looking at library podcasts they just were not as interesting as those I heard on gardening or quilting. I finally decided on NPR's daily story and subscribed. I will have to think about what I might put up on a hospital library podcast that doesn't just go for the novelty of the technology or an amateur garage mike. Don't ask me why but I was a bit surprised about the quantity and constant sex "postings". Just seemed to be constantly tripping over it when looking for so many other things.

I haven't been into YouTube much until now. No wonder people have the impression that "everything" in on the web! I remembered a posting about "Dude, that's a lama" and so went searching. My favorite DePauw segment was with the librarian (hope this works)

Anyway, I sent the lama clip to my daughter's Facebook page. I did post a quilting lesson to my own Facebook page.
There is so much creative freedom and amateur productions I will really have to think through what I would like to put up! This lesson not only opens doors but opens windows too!

Week 6 Photos

Alright, you all thought this was going to be an easy week! Like so many of my quilt pattern that tell you it will be easy but then tell you to cut out two hundred 2 in squares. My husband is the one with the digital camera so it took a bit to get the basics and actually take some pictures. I learned a bit about Photobucket and have managed to put up the pictures you see here on my blog and quilt photos on my Facebook account as well. I will admit I had the overwhelming urge to finish hand stitching one more Celtic knot on the Irish chain quilt before posting to this blog.

How does this relate to my hospital library? Well, I do have photos on my intranet library page but none of these tools were used so it wasn't web 2.0 was it? I still want to do a digitization project with my archives but that will also take more time than I anticipated. Just having a basic understanding of what we had to do in this lesson does help. I will keep practicing. Putting the binding on the Road to the Mountains quilt will have to wait until after MLA or I'll never get my last two assignments done!

Week 5 Web office tools

Okay, now I am officially overloaded! I'm too overwhelmed after looking at google docs, zoho and workspace to even give a constructive comparison. Who knew! I will have go look at the comments for the week to see if someone has already asked what may be an obvious question - What is the advantage of using one of the office document sharing services rather than a wiki or vice-a-versa? Having read the article by Chase I am now all ready to have my daughter post her papers that she would like me to edit on my new Google Docs account! When I think of the time I might save next semester!

I'm still not too sure I'll ever use Linkeden but this I can see using!

Week 4 Social bookmarking

Okay, this one I really love! I can really see using del.icio.us at the library. The tagging is so interesting from one person to the next as it really gives you ideas for directions you might want to take your pages. I may also have to take Funk's suggestion of using Flock. (The Flock page isn't looking as overwhelming as it might have a few weeks ago.) Back to bookmarking - right now my page is full of quilting sites and I'm surprised someone else has already linked to a few of the patterns. Quite addicting it all is. I can see I'll have to put all this together for the library but how to keep up?! Yes, I know the answer, my rss feeds and links!
